By offering the fundamental luxuries of time and space combined with the rich cultural influence of our ancestors, spectacular sunsets followed by stargazing, and an exceptional range of flora and fauna – Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve stands out as a one-of-a-kind destination.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE RESORT
In 1986, Willie de Waal, Pieter de Waal, and Pieter Loubser made a significant investment by purchasing Kagga Kamma and three nearby farms, encompassing 15,000 hectares of untouched fynbos plains. The following year, they built a small stone cottage for entertaining friends on the property.
Their visitors fell in love with the area, prompting the decision to share and preserve it more widely. In 1988 and 1989, they acquired the neighbouring Grootvlei Farm, and together, these properties became known as Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve. Soon after, the first chalets were built, eventually expanding to thirteen chalets, a restaurant, bar, spa, open-air suites, a putt-putt course, driving range, hiking, and 4×4 trails.
A BALANCING ACT
Balancing the preservation of the natural environment and historical sites with modern-day facilities and amenities required thoughtful planning and a commitment to sustainability. To achieve a seamless integration between the natural landscape and the built structures, architects dotted the six- and eight- sleeper chalets along a rolling hill. Each chalet was strategically positioned to capture scenic views of the landscape, while providing privacy. Some of the chalets have been fashioned with stone sourced from the Reserve, while others are designed to resemble the old farmhouses of yesteryear.
GOING OFF THE GRID
Continuing in this mission towards being a true eco-resort, a solar farm was unveiled in November 2022, taking the property completely ‘off the grid’. The farm provides sustainably sourced energy to the chalets, lodge suites and staff homes as well as the reception, restaurant, bar, Spa, laundry and communal areas.
A COMMITMENT TO PRESERVATION
As a leading conservation destination in South Africa, Kagga Kamma works closely with local archaeological experts, such as Heritage Western Cape, to preserve this historical site.
“Our ongoing collaboration with local archaeologists and heritage authorities ensures that we approach preservation with the utmost respect and care, allowing future generations to appreciate and learn from these remarkable cultural artefacts,” explains Tania Steenkamp, Resort Manager.
“Additionally, we incorporate these historical elements into our guest experiences, offering guided tours and educational programmes that highlight the importance of the San and Khoi cultures, fostering a greater appreciation for the area’s rich and diverse history.”
THE APPEAL OF THE KAROO
“The Karoo is becoming increasingly popular as travellers look for remote and unique experiences away from the crowds and distractions of modern life.
“Kagga Kamma is the perfect setting for a digital detox, where owners and guests can focus on the fundamental luxuries of time and space – which is in abundant supply at this resort,” she adds.
“Screen time is replaced by stargazing under the unpolluted night sky, nature drives, hiking trails, exploring the ancient rock art of the San and Khoi people as well the more adventurous 4×4 trails and quad biking,” concludes Tania.
